AltMet has been selected as a top 4 finalist for the prestigious Africa Prize competition!
The Africa Prize is the continent’s biggest prize dedicated to developing the entrepreneurial skills of engineers. “All four of our finalists have found novel ways to address critical challenges in their home countries – in fact, problems that are faced all over the world,” said Africa Prize judge, Rebecca Enonchong. “We’re proud to be part of the development of world-class African technologies, and to support emerging African entrepreneurs.”
AltMet is working to commercialize a low cost, green, low energy consuming process for recovering platinum, palladium and rhodium from emission control devices of vehicles. These metals are useful and valuable for industrial processes. Besides their current and historic uses in catalytic converters for reducing toxic emissions of burning petrol and diesel, platinum is also required for a sustainable, green hydrogen economy. It is a critical component for generating electricity to power hydrogen vehicles – producing only water as a by product.
The platinum metals have been a critical component to the development of South Africa and other platinum producers like Zimbabwe. AltMet’s selection as a top 4 finalist by the expert judging panel is an endorsement of our growth focused collaborative work ethic and confidence in our ambition for innovation driven solutions.
